The late Dr James Cyriax, consultant in Orthopaedic Medicine at St. Thomas' Hospital, London, was largely responsible for developing this system of diagnosis and treatment of conditions affecting the moving parts of the body (muscles, tendons, ligaments, bursae, and joints). Sadly these methods are not widely taught in orthodox medicine.
There are many conditions affecting the body framework which do not respond to osteopathic methods, and some conditions in which osteopathic treatment is contra-indicated. Here the skills of the Orthopaedic Physician may be of help.
In addition to massage, manipulation and exercises the Orthopaedic Physician may use injections of local anaesthetic and small doses of anti-inflammatory drugs applied to the site of the soft tissue injury.
